Having the test and discussing the result in the same place makes things easier — and knowing what is about to happen takes away much of the apprehension. Clínica Rhinus carries out hearing, balance, nasal and throat testing on its own premises, in the Renascença district of São Luís, Brazil. Below we explain, in plain language, what each test is for, how it is done, how long it takes and what to bring on the day. Hearing and balance tests are handled by the speech-language pathologists on our team, and the results are interpreted during the consultation with the ENT specialist.

High-frequency audiometry
Tests high-pitched sounds beyond standard audiometry and detects early loss.
Tinnitus matching
Characterises the pitch and loudness of tinnitus and helps track its course.
Tympanometry
Assesses the eardrum, middle ear pressure and detects fluid.
Newborn hearing screening
Newborn hearing screening: quick and painless.
ABR
Auditory brainstem response: measures hearing at any age, including during sleep.
Electrocochleography
Records the electrical response of the cochlea; supports investigation of hydrops.
Central auditory processing
Assesses how the brain interprets sound and guides auditory training.
Balance
Videonystagmography
Assesses the labyrinth and balance by recording eye movements.
vHIT
Assesses the semicircular canals with rapid head movements and video goggles.
Cervical VEMP
Assesses the saccule and inferior vestibular nerve through a muscle response to sound.
Posturography
Measures postural control and which sense the body relies on most for balance.
Nose and throat
Nasal endoscopy
Consulting-room test that assesses septum, turbinates, sinuses and adenoids.
Videolaryngoscopy
Consulting-room test that assesses the pharynx, larynx and vocal cords.
Videostroboscopy
Shows vocal cord vibration in apparent slow motion.
Sleep
Sleep study
Type IV sleep study, carried out at the patient's home, to investigate apnoea.
